Fire Escape Climbing Rope Ladder

A fire escape climbing rope ladder is a roll-up ladder of two seamless braided ropes with rigid rungs woven or clamped between them, hung from a window sill, a balcony rail or a wall bracket so a person can climb down without waiting for a stair. This range is made in seamless braided nylon for general escape duty and in fire-resistant braided aramid where the ladder may face flame or radiant heat, daga 3 m zuwa 30 m dogo, 300 mm ku 500 mm fadi, with hardwood, aluminium or nylon rungs and a steel hook or thimble at the top.

Every line below is chosen on the order, because the length, the width and the rung pitch together decide how the ladder hangs once it is deployed – and a ladder that hangs badly is a ladder that is not used.

Choose the Model by Storeys

Buyers rarely order “a fire escape climbing rope ladder”; they order a ladder for a building. The table below is the range we make most often, one model per storey count, with the length already allowing for the sill height and the tail that hangs below the last rung.

Standard models – tsayi, rungs and width
Samfura Storeys Ladder length Rungs at 300 mm pitch Standard width Packed weight*
FRL-6 2 6 m 20 300 mm kusan. 4.5 kg
FRL-9 3 9 m 30 350 mm kusan. 6.5 kg
FRL-12 4 12 m 40 350 mm kusan. 8.5 kg
FRL-15 5 15 m 50 400 mm kusan. 10.5 kg
FRL-18 6 18 m 60 400 mm kusan. 12.5 kg

*Packed weight is given for the nylon / hardwood build and moves with the rung material and the rope diameter; it is confirmed on the quotation. Lengths above 18 m are made to order, and the model number follows the length, so a 24 m ladder is FRL-24.

What the Rung and the Rope Decide

Four choices separate one ladder from another, and each of them answers a different question at the window rather than at the factory.

  • Rung material sets the hand and the weight. Hardwood is warm, quiet and does not ring against a sill; aluminium is lighter per rung and does not swell in rain, but it is cold and noisy; nylon tube is the cheapest and the one to choose where the ladder is stowed wet.
  • Rung pitch sets the climb. 300 mm on centres suits an adult climbing in shoes; 280 mm suits a shorter stride; 330 mm gives fewer rungs for the same length, which is a weight saving and a longer reach per step.
  • Width sets the foot. 300 mm is the narrow ladder that fits a domestic window; 400-500 mm is the wide ladder used where the escape route is shared, where the climber may be carrying a child, or where the ladder hangs against a wall and must stand off it.
  • Rope construction sets the life. A seamless braid has no splice along the stringer, so there is no joint to work loose at the point where the load is carried; a knotted or spliced stringer is the first thing to fail on a stored ladder.

Rung pitch and stringer tension are visible along the whole length – the two things a buyer should check before the ladder is hung.

Nylon or Aramid: When the Fire Matters

Nylon is the general-purpose fibre for an escape ladder: it is tough, it takes abrasion against a sill, and it absorbs the shock of a body landing on a rung. Aramid is the fibre for the case where the ladder will hang in a stairwell or against a facade that may already be involved – it is made for heat and flame exposure rather than for a cheaper price, and it is supplied as a fire-resistant braided rope ladder.

The honest limit is worth stating on the page: a rope ladder is an escape aid, not a certified fall-arrest system. Where a project requires the article to be certified to a national standard for escape ladders, say so on the enquiry and the specification, the marking and the paperwork are agreed together before the ladder is made. Where a person is working at height rather than escaping, the right article is a safety harness kuma a igiyar rayuwa mai aminci, not this one.

Fixing It at the Window

The top end is where a fire escape climbing rope ladder succeeds or fails, and it is decided in the order rather than at the window. Three fittings cover most buildings.

Top end, and what it needs from the building
Daidaitawa What it needs Where it suits
Two steel hooks A sill or a reveal the hook can drop over, thick enough not to crush Domestic windows, hotel rooms, the usual roll-up escape kit
Two thimbles A wall anchor, a ring or a bracket to shackle to Balconies, dakunan shuka, fixed escape routes on a facade
Carabiner loops A rated anchor point already installed Where the ladder is issued as part of a kit and clipped on at the point of use
Wall bracket A fixed plate with a stand-off Permanent installations where the ladder must hang clear of the wall

A ladder hung on hooks must be long enough that the last rung sits below the sill by the depth of a step, and short enough that the rungs do not bunch on the ground. That is what the 0.5 m tail in the model table is for: it is the difference between stepping off at the bottom and dropping.

Stowing, Deployment and the Check Before Use

A roll-up ladder is bought for the day it is needed, and the whole value of it is decided by whether it comes out of the bag straight. Four lines cover the practical side.

  • Roll, do not fold. A ladder rolled from the bottom rung upward deploys without a tangle; a folded one has to be shaken out at the window, which is the worst moment to be shaking anything.
  • Store it where it will be found. The stuff bag belongs beside the window it serves, marked with the length, not in a store room on another floor.
  • Check the two stringers and the top hooks. Abrasion at the sill, a cut in the braid, a bent hook or a loose ferrule are the four faults that matter, and all four are visible in daylight in under a minute.
  • Retire it after use. A ladder that has carried a person down a wall has been loaded and abraded at the sill; it is inspected, and where a fault is found it is replaced rather than re-bagged.

Where the rung meets the stringer is the part to specify: woven through the braid, or clamped with a ferrule and two rivets.

How long should a fire escape rope ladder be?

One storey is taken as 3.0 m, and half a metre is added as a tail so the last rung hangs below the sill. A four-storey building therefore takes a 12 m fire escape climbing rope ladder, which is the FRL-12 model in the table above.

Nylon or aramid for a fire escape ladder?

Nylon for general escape duty: it is tough, abrasion-resistant and absorbs shock. Aramid where the ladder may face flame or radiant heat, because it is made for heat exposure rather than for price. Both are supplied as seamless braided stringers.

What width do I need for a rope ladder?

300 mm for a domestic window where one adult climbs at a time; 350-400 mm for shared routes and for buildings where the climber may be carrying a child; 450-500 mm where the ladder hangs against a wall and has to stand off it. Width is measured centre to centre of the two ropes.

Can a rope ladder be used by workers at height, not just for escape?

A'a. A rope ladder is an escape aid. Work at height needs a fall-arrest or work-positioning system – a harness, a lifeline and a rated anchor – and the ladder is at most an access aid within that system.

How is a fire escape rope ladder fixed at the top?

With two steel hooks over the sill, two thimbles shackled to an anchor, carabiner loops onto a rated point, or a wall bracket for a permanent installation. State the fixing on the order, because the top end shortens the usable length.

What rung pitch is standard?

300 mm on centres for an adult climbing in shoes, 280 mm for a shorter stride, 330 mm where a lighter ladder matters more than the reach per step. The pitch is quoted on centres, so the rung count follows from the length rather than the other way round.

Can the ladder be printed with our building reference?

Ee. Tsawon, the model and your own reference are printed on a sewn label at the top, and the stuff bag can carry the same reference. Send the exact string to be printed and it is confirmed before the ladders are made.

Nemi Magana

Send the storey count or the length, fadin, the rung material and pitch, the top fixing, zaren (nylon or aramid) and the reference to print. We confirm the model, the packed weight and the marking before the ladders are made – fire escape climbing rope ladders from 3 m zuwa 30 m, 300 mm ku 500 mm, roll-up bag or carton.
