Wide Body Lifting Webbing Sling
A wide body lifting webbing sling is bought for the surface it touches rather than for the tonnage alone. The band is woven wide — 100 mm to 300 mm as standard, up to 600 mm to order — so the same load is spread over a large contact area instead of a narrow line, and a soft, rolled, polished or finished load arrives undamaged. Widening also adds load-bearing yarn, so the wide range runs from 8 t to 48 t in duplex, triplex and quadplex high-tenacity polyester. Supplied as a flat wide eye & eye sling or as a wide endless loop, made to order, proof-tested, EN 1492-1 with a 7:1 safety factor.

Why the width matters as much as the tonnage
Every webbing sling publishes a working load limit. Far fewer publish what the band does to the load, and on soft, round, coated or finished work that is the number that decides the purchase. A load is carried on the width of the band, so the pressure under the sling falls in direct proportion to that width. Doubling the band width halves the pressure; there is no other change to the lift.
The arithmetic is simple and worth doing before the sling is chosen. Take the load shared by the band and divide it by the band width — that gives the linear bearing load per centimetre of contact. A basket hitch passes the band under the load twice, so it doubles the bearing strips and halves the figure again.

Working load limit by width and ply
Width and ply together set the figure. The capacities below are for one leg hanging vertically, which is the figure printed on the sling; the hitch changes it, and the mode factors are in the parameter table above.
| Webbing width | Duplex (2-ply) | Triplex (3-ply) | Quadplex (4-ply) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 mm | 8 t | 12 t | 16 t |

Three forms of wide body sling
Wide webbing is supplied in three shapes, and the shape decides how the band sits on the load.
| Form | What it is | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Wide flat eye & eye sling | A wide band with a sewn eye at each end | Vertical and basket lifts where the band must present a broad flat face and the ends must sit flat on a hook |
| Wide endless loop sling | A continuous wide band with no stitching in the load path | Double-wrap and choke duty, and where the sling is thrown round a load and hooked |
| Wide basket / wrap-around sling | A wide band used under or around the load as its only contact | Round, soft, polished or composite loads where contact area is the whole reason for buying |

Wide body against a standard webbing sling
A wide body sling is not simply a better sling; it trades handling for contact. Know which side of the trade you need before you specify.
| Standard webbing sling | Wide body lifting webbing sling | |
|---|---|---|
| Band width | 25–100 mm typical | 100–300 mm standard, to 600 mm to order |
| Pressure on the load | Concentrated on a narrow face | Falls in proportion to the width — see Table 1 |
| Effect on the load | Can crush, mark or crease soft and finished work | The reason to buy it: wide, soft contact, no marking |
| Handling | Light and folds small | Bulkier and stiffer to fold — the price of the width |
| Hook and eye space | Fits small hooks and tight bowls | A wide band needs a longer eye and a bigger bowl — check it |
| Best use | General lifting where the surface does not matter | Cylinders, rolls, drums, sheet, soft goods and finished work |
Where a wide body sling is used
Rolling and cylindrical loads come first: coils, reels, rolls of film or paper, drums and pipe bundles, where a narrow band would crush the wall or the wrap. Then finished work — painted fabrications, polished sheet, anodised and coated profiles — where a mark is a reject. Then soft and composite loads, where the load itself has a pressure limit and the band has to stay under it. Because the wide band presents the same face in every direction, these are also the slings that pair naturally with a lifting spreader beam on two and four leg lifts, where the legs must stay parallel and the load must stay level. Where the surface is genuinely sensitive, the woven-nylon alternative is the nylon flat eye and eye webbing sling.

Related slings in the range
The wide band is one axis of the range; the others are the end form and the duty. For the family overview see flat webbing slings, the general-purpose eye and eye webbing slings and the capacity-driven heavy duty eye & eye flat web sling. Where the eye itself is the subject, the heavy eye webbing sling covers it. Where there is no stitching at all, the endless flat webbing sling and the runda selar do the same job in a different form; on hot work the high temperature webbing sling and the aramid webbing sling take over, and for pipe and tube the steel pipe lifting strap is the purpose-made answer. De lifting devices page covers the fittings.
Frequently asked questions
Does a wider band lift more?
Yes — a wider band carries more load-bearing yarn, which is why the 300 mm quadplex build reaches 48 t. But that is not why buyers specify wide body. They specify it for the pressure: choose the width from the pressure the load will accept, then the ply that gives the figure you need. Width first, ply second is the correct order for a wide body sling.
How is it different from a round sling?
A rund sele is a continuous loop of yarn inside a woven sleeve: softer in every direction, but it contacts the load on a narrow line and the sleeve hides the load-bearing yarn. A wide body sling contacts the load over its whole width, and because the webbing is open to inspection the band and the stitching can be checked directly.
Can a wide body sling be used in a basket hitch?
It is the natural way to use one. A basket hitch passes the band under the load twice, so the bearing strips double and the pressure on the load halves again — on a 20 t load a 300 mm band in a basket hitch is working at roughly 333 kg per centimetre of contact.
Will a wide band fit my hook?
Check two dimensions before ordering: the bearing width of the sewn eye and the eye length that lets the band clear the hook body. Above 200 mm the eye usually has to be longer simply to seat properly. Send us the hook or shackle and we will match the eye to it.
What is the widest you can weave?
300 mm is the standard top of the range and 600 mm is made to order, with the ply set to suit the working load limit. Above that, the load normally wants a different form rather than a wider band — tell us the load and we will say which.
Order a wide body lifting webbing sling
Tell us three things and the specification follows: what is being lifted, what the load can take in pressure, and how the sling will be hitched. We will confirm the width, the ply, the length, the end form, the eye dimensions and the marking, and quote before the band is woven.
