Endless flat Webbing sling

An endless flat webbing sling is a band of flat woven webbing closed into a continuous loop — no ends, no eyes and no metal fittings anywhere on the article. There is nothing to thread and nothing to line up: the loop goes over the hook and the whole circumference becomes a soft, load-bearing face. Built in 100 % high-tenacity polyester from 1 t to 12 t, single ply or duplex, colour coded and labelled to EN 1492-1 with a 7:1 safety factor, woven and proof tested in our own mill in Taizhou, Jiangsu.

What the closed loop gives you

An endless sling is not a sling with its ends hidden; it is a different article, and three practical consequences follow. Nothing touches the load but soft fibre, so coated tube, polished sheet and anodised aluminium are carried without a witness mark. The arrangement is decided at the load — the same loop works vertically, in a basket and in a choke, which is why one size on the rack covers the job. And the whole load path is on the outside, where it can be seen: unlike a zagaye majajjawa, whose core is hidden inside a sleeve, a flat loop shows its entire bearing surface to the inspector. The band is endless in use, not seamless: it is closed by a lapped and stitched joint, and that joint is the one place to inspect before every lift.

Endless loop or eye & eye — which flat sling?

Both are flat webbing, and the choice is decided less by the load than by the rig. An endless loop has nothing to line up and nothing to lose; a sling with a sewn eye at each end presents a definite end to a hook or a shackle and can be shortened or doubled in ways a loop cannot.

Endless flat webbing sling Eye & eye flat webbing sling
Ends None — a continuous closed loop One sewn eye at each end
Rigging speed Drop it over the hook; nothing to thread Both eyes must be seated on the hook or shackle
Wear The bearing point, the hook contact and the closure all move when the loop is turned The eyes wear where they bear, and they cannot be moved
Hitches Vertical, basket and choke from the same loop; the choke passes the loop through itself Vertical, basket and choke; the choke is easier to seat cleanly
Loads it suits Pipe, tube, coils, crates, timber and anything that must not be marked Loads needing a defined end at the hook, and multi-leg work off a beam
Weak point to watch The stitched joint, and the hook contact point The eye root, where the load concentrates

A closed loop carries only one made connection — the lapped and stitched joint — and the sewn label is the authority on its working load limit.

Working load limit, width and colour

The colour gives the capacity band at a glance, but the stitched label is the authority — and above 10 t there is no colour to read at all. Figures are for a straight (vertical) lift; every other arrangement is derived from them by the mode factors below.

Length: the two conventions that differ by a factor of two

A closed loop has no ends, so there is nothing to measure end to end, and this trade quotes the same endless flat webbing sling under two conventions. Getting them the wrong way round is the single most common ordering error on this product, and it is the reason more loops are replaced than for any other cause. Name the convention, or simply give the girth of the article the loop has to go round.

Table 4 — How the same sling is quoted.
Quoted convention What it measures The same sling equals
Circumference (perimeter) The total length of band in the finished article 2 m
Laid-flat length The length of the loop when it is laid out flat and doubled 1 m
Effective working length The usable height you actually get when the loop hangs 1 m
Girth of the load The distance the loop has to travel round the article State the load instead

Hitches and the mode factor

The label figure is the straight-lift rating, and every other arrangement is derived from it — so a choke keeps 0.8 of the figure and a 4 t load in a choke needs a 5 t sling. Where the legs hang from a beam rather than a single hook, the rating is set by the beam: our lifting spreader beams take the same fittings.

Table 5 — Mode factors (EN 1492-1 basis).
Arrangement Factor What it means on the floor
Vertical 1.0 One loop, straight up. The band hangs and carries.
Choked 0.8 The loop goes round the load and back through itself; the wrap grips and the band is loaded against itself.
Basket, 0–45° 2.0 Band under the load, both legs to the hook, legs near vertical.
Basket, 45–60° 1.4 Basket with the legs spread; the spread costs capacity.
Two legs, 0–45° 1.4 Two bands to one hook, legs near vertical, load shared.
Two legs, 45–60° 1.0 The same pair with the legs spread — the same loss of capacity.

Where an endless flat webbing sling is used

A closed soft loop is bought from the load outwards: pipe, tube and poles wrapped rather than hooked; galvanised and coated sheet handled where a mark is a rejection; timber packs and crates lifted without printing a line into dressed stock; pre-cast concrete and stone carried on a soft, wide face. Where the load has a sharp edge, a burr or weld spatter, the sleeve is a specification line rather than an accessory — ask for it at the enquiry stage, because a sleeve cannot be retro-fitted to a band already woven.

The endless flat loop sits inside a family, and the neighbouring pages take the detail. For the deep engineering page see flat endless slings; for the material-specific build see the endless polyester flat webbing sling; for the standard that names it, the endless type webbing sling; for the one-trip version, the single use endless webbing sling; and for the large end of the ladder, the heavy duty endless lifting web slings. Where a much wider band is wanted to spread the bearing pressure, the wide body lifting webbing sling is the same loop in a heavier weave; where the capacity runs past the webbing ladder, the endless round sling takes over; and for pipe duty specifically, the steel pipe lifting strap is purpose-made. Frequently asked questions

What is an endless flat webbing sling?

A continuous loop of flat woven webbing with no ends, no eyes and no metal fittings. It is the endless type A flat woven webbing sling of EN 1492-1, built from 1 t to 12 t in polyester, single ply or duplex, at the width and length the load requires.

Is it seamless?

No — endless in use, not seamless. The loop is closed by laying the two ends of the band over one another and stitching the lap. That joint is a full-strength lap and it sits in the load path, so it is the first thing to inspect. A closed loop with nothing joined in the load-bearing element at all is the endless round sling, where only the outer sleeve is a tube and the core is continuous.

How do I specify the length?

By circumference or by effective working length — the two differ by about a factor of two. Name the convention or give the girth of the article the loop must go round, and we will confirm the figure on the order acknowledgement.

Can it be used in a choke?

Yes, and the arrangement must be stated, because the choked figure is lower than the vertical figure: a choke keeps 0.8, so a 4 t load needs a 5 t sling. Vertical, basket and choked are three different ratings on the same loop.

Will it mark pipe or galvanised sheet?

No, provided the edge is protected where the load has one. The flat band spreads the bearing over its full width and no metal fitting touches the load, which is why a synthetic loop is chosen over a wire rope sling on finished work.

Order an endless flat webbing sling

Send us the load and its shape, the figure per hitch, the arrangement the crew will actually rig, the width or the working load limit you need, and whether your length figure is a circumference or an effective working length.
