8Tonne Webbing Sling – Lengths from 2mtr to 10mtr EWL Available
Eight tonnes is about the largest flat sling a fitter still coils onto a shoulder and carries up a ladder. Ours is a 200 mm blue duplex body — 8,000 kg WLL, 7:1 factor, double reinforced eyes, stitched to any effective working length from 2 m to 10 m.
Why this size starts at 2 m and stops at 10 m
The short end is for chokers and bench work — a 2 m sling round a machine bed, a bundle of bar stock, a pump on a pallet. The long end is for two-point lifts where the hook rides well above the load: a 10 m pair off a spreader buys you the height without stacking extension links into the rig.
Everything between those ends is stitched to order and priced by the metre, so there is no reason to accept a 6 m sling on a job that wants 5.5 m. Stock lengths are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 m.
If you are working from a drawing rather than a tape measure, the convention is the same as on our 10 tonne sling, 3 m to 12 m EWL: EWL is measured bearing point to bearing point, and the eyes sit outside it.
Duplex at 200 mm, and double reinforced eyes
Eight tonnes is where duplex stops being a preference and becomes the sensible default. Two 200 mm plies stitched into one body lie flatter over a corner than a single wide ply, so the sling follows the radius instead of bridging it and leaving the stitch line carrying the edge.
The eyes are double reinforced: an extra layer folded into each eye and locked down with multi-row stitching. That is the part that wears first when the same sling is choked on the same hook every shift, and it is the difference between a two-year sling and a one-season sling.
Weight is the other reason crews like this size. A 200 mm duplex body at 5 m EWL is still a one-man carry — the point at which a flat sling stops being portable sits above this size, not at it.

Blue is a check, not a rating
Under EN 1492-1 the 8 t sling is blue. In a rack that also holds 5 t red and 10 t orange, colour is the fastest thing a fitter can read at arm’s length — and the first thing an inspector ignores. What gets checked is the label: WLL, length, material, CE mark and the batch serial, plus the red warning yarn under the cover. See red through a cut and the sling is out of service, whatever colour it is.
Polyester is rated −40 °C to +100 °C and shrugs off oil, grease and rot. It also melts before it burns, which is why a polyester sling gives warning rather than letting go without one.
Where the 8 tonne size gets used
- Maintenance crews pulling pumps, motors and gearboxes on a 2 m choker.
- Machine shops lifting bar stock and billet bundles in a basket hitch.
- Precast yards handling small panels and formwork with a 4–6 m pair.
- Ship’s stores and engine room spares, where a 10 m length reaches past the casing.
- Rental fleets standardising on one body width across a 2–10 m spread.

Questions we get on the 8 tonne size
- How much is 8 tonne in kg?
- 8,000 kg working load limit. At a 7:1 factor the minimum breaking load is 56,000 kg, so the rating is the load you may lift, not the load at which it fails.
- Why is an 8 tonne sling blue?
- EN 1492-1 assigns blue to the 8 t size. The step either side is red at 5 t and orange at 10 t. Above 10 t the colour stops discriminating, so the label does the work.
- Is the body 200 mm or wider?
- 200 mm duplex is our standard 8 t build. A single-ply body reaching the same WLL runs wider and stiffer — tell us the load surface and we will say which is the better fit.
- Can I use a 2 m sling in a choke hitch?
- Yes, and 2 m is the length most often ordered for it. A choke takes the rating to 6,400 kg, so size the hitch before the length.
- Webbing sling or round sling at 8 t?
- Flat webbing where you want width and a visible surface to inspect. A yika sling where the shape is awkward to choke or the sling has to live in a toolbox.
- What comes with the sling?
- A blue EN 1492-1 label with WLL and length, a CE declaration, and a test certificate traced to the batch. Certificates travel with the shipping documents, not in a separate email.
