900 Tonne UHMWPE Round Sling

A 900 tonne UHMWPE round sling is rated 900,000 kg on a single vertical leg: a continuous UHMWPE (Dyneema) core inside a heavy duty woven polyester sleeve, a minimum breaking load of 6,300,000 kg Na 7:1, and a 1,800,000 kg proof load applied to every body before it is marked.

A UHMWPE sling at this capacity is bought for one reason — the body you have to handle. The rating is not the reason — at this size the working load limit is set by the core count and the sleeve, not by the fibre. Everything else on this page is what the lighter core costs and where that cost is paid.

WLL900T100M — a 100 M 900 t body. At this length the core choice stops being about capacity and becomes a question of hook height, coil weight and how many people it takes to dress the lift.

What the Core Changes — and What It Does Not

The core carries the load and the sleeve takes the abrasion; that is true of every round sling. Changing the core from polyester to UHMWPE leaves the rating alone and moves five other properties, and they do not all move in your favour.

Property Rdzeń poliestrowy UHMWPE core
Working load limit at this size 900,000 kg 900,000 kg — unchanged
Weight of the body Baseline Lower for the same rating — the point of buying it
Elongation at working load Around 2–3% Lower — less hook height lost under load
Continuous temperature Up to +100 °C Lower, typically quoted around 70–80 °C — confirm the yarn grade
Behaviour under sustained load Stable Creeps — not for a load left hanging
Cut and chafe resistance Good Higher at equal weight
Cost per sling Baseline Higher

Read the table downwards and the argument for UHMWPE narrows to one line: it is lighter and it stretches less. The other four rows are the price.

Where the Saved Weight Goes

On a short sling the weight difference is a convenience. On the 100 m body above it is a different job. The saving shows up in three places, and none of them is the load chart:

  • In the coil. A lighter body is a coil one size smaller, moved by the forklift you already have rather than the crane you have to book.
  • In the dressing. Fewer people on the body, less time under the hook, and less chance of a twist that has to be walked out at height.
  • In the hook height. Lower elongation means less of the leg length is spent stretching — a real gain on a long body, where one percentage point is a metre.

Handling is where the core choice is paid for or earned — a body that can be moved on the forks rather than the crane changes the day’s plan.

The Three Conditions That Rule UHMWPE Out

This is the part a specification sheet usually leaves out. At 900 T, the wrong core is an expensive mistake, and there are three situations where polyester is the correct answer regardless of weight.

1. Ciepło

UHMWPE has a lower continuous ceiling than polyester — typically 70–80 °C against the polyester version’s 100 °C, depending on the yarn grade. Foundry work, hot castings, steam lines and anything that radiates are out; that is aramid territory, not UHMWPE and not polyester.

2. Sustained load

UHMWPE creeps under tension held over time. A sling that stays loaded for days — a semi-permanent rig, a load parked under tension, a sling stored hanging with weight on it — will lose length and, eventually, margin. For static duty, specify polyester and take the load off the sling between lifts.

3. No handling problem to solve

If a crane does all the handling, the body is short, and nobody has to carry or drag it, the weight saving buys nothing and the cost premium is simply a cost premium. UHMWPE is the right core when the handling is real — long bodies, sites with limited lifting gear, marine and confined-space work — not as a default upgrade.

The one question that decides it: who lifts the sling itself? If the answer is a crane every time, buy polyester. If it is two people, a pallet truck or a forklift that is already busy, the lighter core earns its price.

What 900 Tonnes Does to the Body

Length becomes a variable

At 900 T, bodies are made long as often as they are made heavy — the one above is 100 M. Length drives coil size, handling time and the effect of every percentage point of stretch, which is why the length convention (lay-flat or full circumference) is settled on the drawing before anything is woven.

The label has to name the core

An orange sleeve looks the same whatever is inside it. Because the two cores have different temperature ceilings and different creep behaviour, the sewn label on this sling states the fibre as well as the working load limit, długość, standard and serial — otherwise a rigger has no way to know which limit applies at the hook.

Wear is still the sleeve’s job

UHMWPE resists cutting better than polyester at equal weight, but the sleeve is what meets the edge. Wear pads at the choke point, and a whole-loop inspection, remain the routine — the core is not visible and cannot be inspected directly.

The Sling on Its Own

Arrangement Mode factor Limit obciążenia roboczego
Vertical 1.0 900,000 kg (900 T)
Zadławiony 0.8 720,000 kg (720 T)
Koszyk, 0–7° 2.0 1,800,000 kg (1,800 T)
Koszyk, 7–45° 1.4 1,260,000 kg (1,260 T)
Koszyk, 45–60° 1.0 900,000 kg (900 T)

In a set, four legs at 0–45° to vertical rate 1,890,000 kg (factor 2.1) I 1,350,000 kg at 45–60° (factor 1.5). Those factors stop at four legs; beyond that the lift is engineered, and the 800 t page sets out what that involves.

Proof, Marking and the Paper That Travels With It

Every body is proof loaded to 1,800,000 kg and the figure is recorded against its serial number before the label is sewn on. The label carries the core fibre, because the fibre is what sets the temperature and creep limits at the hook; the proof record carries the length convention, because that is what makes the next sling in the set interchangeable.

In Service

  • Read the whole loop. The core cannot be seen; cuts, glazing, hardening or core show-through anywhere on the sleeve retire the sling.
  • Keep it away from heat. The lower ceiling is the one limit that is easy to breach and impossible to see afterwards.
  • Do not store it loaded. Coiled, dry, off the floor, no tension on the body between lifts.
  • Wear pads at the choke. The sleeve is the wear layer; the core’s cut resistance is not a licence to bear on an edge.

Aplikacje

  • Long bodies — 50 m and above — where the weight of the sling itself governs the handling plan
  • Heavy modules lifted on sites where the crane at the storage end is the smaller of the two
  • Morski, port and confined-space work where a body has to be carried, not craned
  • Lifts where headroom is short and the lower stretch of a UHMWPE core buys back hook height
  • Soft bearing on machined, coated or painted loads that must not be marked
  • Any lift where the rigging is dressed by hand at height and every kilogram counts
Several heavy duty round sling bodies from one production batch laid out on a factory floor
Bodies from one batch. In a set, equal length and a shared set number matter more than the core — the legs have to be interchangeable.

Często zadawane pytania

Why UHMWPE rather than polyester at 900 tonnes?

For the body you handle, not the rating — the working load limit comes from the core count and the sleeve, not the fibre. The UHMWPE version is lighter and stretches less at working load, which matters most on long bodies where a single percentage point is a metre of hook height.

What is the temperature limit?

Lower than polyester’s +100 °C — UHMWPE is normally quoted around 70–80 °C continuous, and the exact figure depends on the yarn grade and sleeve. Confirm it for the construction you are ordering; hot loads belong to an aramid sling.

Can it be left under load?

NIE. UHMWPE creeps under sustained tension, so it is not the core for a load left hanging for days or a sling stored tensioned. For static duty, specify polyester and take the load off between lifts.

What is the proof load?

1,800,000 kg, twice the vertical working load limit, applied to each sling individually and recorded against its serial before marking.

How much can four of them lift?

1,890,000 kg at 0–45° to vertical (factor 2.1) I 1,350,000 kg at 45–60° (factor 1.5). Standard factors stop at four legs; a six- or eight-leg lift is an engineered plan.
