50 Ton Polyester Webbing Slings – Lifting Slings as 1353

A 50 ton polyester webbing sling is the last size in the flat webbing range that is still a single band, and it is the point where the band stops behaving like a hand tool. At 50,000 kg vertical the webbing is 600 mm wide in four plies, a metre of it weighs about 5 kg, and an 8 m sling arrives as a 43 kg coil that two people lift onto the hook. Everything below is written for that reality: the build, the weight, the hitch figures, and the AS 1353 marking the Australian and New Zealand market asks for.

A 50 t single-leg flat sling, 8 m. The WLL and length are printed into the band as well as sewn on the label.

Built on the width, not on the number

Capacity in a flat sling comes from the number of load-bearing warp yarns, and the yarns only fit into width and ply. In a 300 mm quadplex band this range stops at 48 t, which is why the 50 t figure is delivered on a 600 mm four-ply band: double the width, double the stitch rows at each eye, and a bearing face wide enough to keep the pressure on steel plate inside limits. If a hook bowl, shackle or headroom will not take 600 mm, say so at enquiry — a narrower heavy build is possible, but the width, the eye length and the hook opening have to be settled together rather than one after the other.

What 50 tonnes actually lifts, by hitch

The label figure is the vertical rating. Every other arrangement is that figure multiplied by the mode factor, and at this size the difference between two hitches is tens of tonnes — 20 t of capacity disappears the moment the band is choked.

Hitch Mode factor Capacity of one 50 t sling
Vertical 1.0 50,000 kg
Choked 0.8 40,000 kg
Basket, legs 0–45° 2.0 100,000 kg
Basket, legs 45–60° 1.4 70,000 kg
Two legs, 0–45° 1.4 70,000 kg
Two legs, 45–60° 1.0 50,000 kg

Weight and coil — the part the drawing does not show

A 50 t band cannot be folded into a bag and carried up a ladder. Weights below are for the finished sling including both eyes, ±5%, and they are the reason a heavy sling is ordered as a coil on a pallet rather than loose.

Length, eye to eye Sling weight Coil diameter Handling on site
6 m ~33 kg ~420 mm Two people
8 m ~43 kg ~480 mm Two people
10 m ~53 kg ~520 mm Two people, or pallet and sling
12 m ~63 kg ~560 mm Pallet and two people

AS 1353 — what actually changes for the Australian buyer

AS 1353.1 covers flat woven webbing slings made from synthetic fibre, and it is the standard named on most Australian and New Zealand purchase orders for this class of sling. The webbing, the stitching and the 7:1 factor are the same as an EN 1492-1 build; three things around them change:

  • The label set. Working load limit, लम्बाइ, mode factors, the standard number, manufacturer, batch and date, in the wording AS 1353.1 asks for rather than the EN layout.
  • The paperwork. A test certificate citing AS 1353.1, with the batch traceable to the sling in the coil.
  • The colour as a second check. Colour coding by WLL is used on site as a fast identifier, and the printed label remains the figure that governs the lift.

If a specification names an edition — “AS 1353:2026” on a tender, for example — put that edition on the purchase order and we mark and certify to the edition you name, so the paperwork and the sling agree when the inspector reads them side by side.

Rigging notes at 50 tonnes

  • Fittings of the same class. A 50 t leg needs a bow shackle and hook of matching rating, and the eye has to clear the bowl. A 600 mm band on an undersized hook is a bearing problem, not a styling one.
  • Keep the legs vertical with a spreader. Two 50 t legs pulled together at 45–60° deliver 50 t, not 100 t. A lifting spreader beam holds the legs parallel and the load level, and it is the usual answer above 30 t.
  • Protect the edge before the lift, not after. At this load a sheared plate edge cuts through a band in a single lift. Sleeves or corner protectors are part of the specification, and they are cheaper than the sling.
  • Do not plan a choked lift at 50 t. Choked capacity is 40 t. If the load can only be choked, buy the next size up or re-think the hitch.

Heavy two-leg work: legs kept parallel by a spreader, with load cells in the legs so the figure per leg is read rather than assumed.

The eye is where a heavy band wears out first: reinforced, multi-row stitching, and long enough to seat in a 50 t shackle bowl.

Test, certificate and delivery

Every sling is proof loaded to 2 × WLL on our own horizontal bed before it is coiled, and the certificate carries the batch number that is printed on the band. The band is woven after the length and the eye are fixed, so lead time is quoted per order rather than published as a fixed figure. Tell us the load, the hitch, the length eye to eye, the hook or shackle it will sit in, and the standard — request a quotation and we will confirm the width, the eye and the marking before the band is woven.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a 50 t sling 600 mm wide instead of 300 mm?

Because capacity lives in the yarn, and the yarn lives in width and ply. A 300 mm quadplex band reaches 48 t in this range; 50 t needs the 600 mm four-ply build. The wider band also halves the bearing pressure on the load, which matters on plate, coated sheet and finished work.

How much does a 50 ton webbing sling weigh?

About 5 kg per metre of band: roughly 33 kg at 6 m, 43 kg at 8 m and 53 kg at 10 m, eyes included. Plan the handling before the lift — a heavy sling is normally coiled onto a pallet and lifted into position.

Can two 50 t slings lift 100 tonnes?

Only with the legs vertical. In a two-leg lift at 0–45° the pair gives 70 t, and at 45–60° it gives 50 t. Where the load is wider than the hook, a spreader is what restores the figure.

Is an AS 1353 sling different from an EN 1492-1 sling?

The band and the 7:1 factor are the same. The label wording, the standard cited on the certificate and the edition marked on the sling are what change. State the standard and the edition on the order and the two documents will match.

Do you supply the test certificate with the sling?

Yes — each sling is proof loaded to 2 × WLL and shipped with a certificate and test report from our CNAS-accredited laboratory, batch-matched to the number printed on the band.
