Pallet Cargo Net

A pallet cargo net is a high-strength polyester net that goes over a pallet load and hooks to the pallet itself, so that cartons, bags or cases stay on the deck when the load is moved, racked or picked from. It is made in this works in webbing or in rope, to the pallet, and it is the cheapest way to stop the slow collapse that ends with a case on the floor and a claim on the desk.

The same net is bought for four different jobs, and the page is written around that because the requirements are not the same: containing a pallet load, guarding the face of a racking bay, restraining cargo inside a store or a vehicle, thiab – separately, and to a different rulebook – air cargo. A net sold for one and used for another is how the complaints start.

Four jobs, four specifications

Rooj 1 – what the net is being asked to do
The job What the net does What decides the specification
Contain a pallet load Holds the stack square on the deck while the pallet is moved by forklift or pallet truck Pallet size, stack height, mesh against the smallest item, and what the hooks can reach
Guard a rack bay Hangs across the face of the racking so that nothing is pushed off the back or falls into the aisle Bay width and height, beam spacing, and how the net is fixed to the uprights
Restrain cargo in store or in a vehicle Covers the load where wrap is not wanted – breathable, reusable, visible Load type, access needed during the day, and whether it travels
Air cargo Restrains a ULD or a pallet on an aircraft deck The operator’s figures and fittings. A separate, regulated article – the requirements come from the airline, not from this page

Webbing or rope

Rooj 2 – the two constructions
Webbing net Rope net
On a pallet Flat strands lie on the cartons and spread the pressure; reads as a cover Round strands sit in the gaps; better on bags and on irregular stacks
Qhov hnyav Heavier per square metre, folds flat Lighter, packs into a smaller bag
Wear Abrasion at the border and at the hooks Abrasion at the knots; easier to repair on site
Where it wins Cartons, cases, drums, mixed pallets Bags, produce, anything soft or round

Mesh: the smallest item decides

A pallet net is chosen by the smallest thing on the pallet. That is the whole rule, and it is the one most often skipped: ib 100 mm net over a pallet of small cartons is a net over a pallet of gaps.

Rooj 3 – mesh by load
Lub nra Mesh Why
Cartons and cases 45 – 60 mm Corners of small cartons cannot pass; the net closes on the stack
Bags and sacks 45 – 60 mm Bags deform into any opening wider than a shoulder
Drums and pails 75 – 100 mm The net holds the shapes; a fine mesh only blinds over
Bricks, blocks, paving 25 – 45 mm plus a sheet A net alone will not hold a block face; the sheet does
Produce and horticulture 45 – 60 mm Open enough to breathe, fine enough to hold the punnet

Sizing to the pallet, and to the rack

Rooj 4 – the usual sizes
Pallet or bay Footprint (about) Net to order
Euro pallet 1200 x 800 mm 1.4 x 1.0 m cover, hooks under the deck
Industrial pallet 1200 x 1000 mm 1.4 x 1.2 m cover, or a full drop-down cover to 1.8 m high
Square pallet 1200 x 1200 mm 1.4 x 1.4 m cover, corner loops
Rack bay 2.7 m wide, beams at 1.5 – 2.0 m A webbing pallet rack netting panel in one or two sections, fixed to the uprights
Tall load Any footprint, 1.8 – 2.2 m high A cover with sides, not a flat sheet: the sides are what hold the stack

Measure the loaded pallet, not the pallet. A net that fits the deck and not the stack is a net that hooks on and bridges the load, which is worse than nothing because it looks secured.

A yellow net over a wrapped pallet. Wrap holds the stack; the net is what stops the wrap failing at a corner – and it is the net that can be taken off and used again.

Net or stretch wrap

Wrap is cheaper per pallet and it is the right answer for a load that ships once and is unwrapped at the far end. A net is the right answer where the pallet is handled repeatedly, where the load has to breathe, where the person picking needs to see what is inside, or where the wrap keeps failing at the corners.

  • Reusable. A net goes on and off a hundred times; wrap goes in the bin at the first stop.
  • Breathable. Produce, timber, and anything that sweats: a wrapped pallet that cannot vent is a mould claim.
  • Visible. A picker can see the label through a net, which is why rack-side netting is used in picking aisles.
  • No knife. Nothing to cut, so nothing to cut into the goods – and nothing to cut into a hand.

Hooking it down

  • Hook under the deck, not to the cartons. The net has to be held by the pallet; hooking it to a case means the net goes where the case goes.
  • Corner loops first. Set the four corners, then work along the sides, then take up the slack across the top.
  • Do not bridge the stack. A net tight across the top with slack at the sides is a lid, not a containment; the sides have to be in contact.
  • Keep the hooks off the fork entry. A hook that sits in the fork pocket is a hook that gets torn off at the first lift.
  • Rack face nets are fixed top and bottom to the uprights, tensioned enough that a case cannot push through, and hung on the aisle side that people work from.

Not a lifting net

A pallet cargo net contains a load; it does not carry one. Lifting a pallet by a cargo net – with a crane, a hoist or a forklift under the net – is the mistake this product is most often asked to survive, and it will not. A cargo lifting net is a rated article with a working load limit, tested fittings and a label; a pallet containment net has none of those, and the two should never be substituted.

Cases on a pallet under a webbing net, out in the open: the net follows the load’s own corners and holds the stack square, which is what a pallet net is for – not for putting a sling under.

In store, on a rack, in a truck

The same net turns up in three places, and the fixing changes in each. On a pallet it hooks to the deck; on a rack it becomes pallet rack netting, fixed to the uprights as a face guard; in a vehicle it is the top layer over a load that is already lashed, which is the job a truck cargo net is sized for. A container cargo net covers the fourth case – the door end of a box – and the three are often bought together by the same warehouse.

Laid out flat: square mesh, a webbing border and the loops that take the hooks. Checking a net flat is the quickest way to find the cut strand before it is over a load.

Kev tshuaj xyuas

  • Cuts and chafe at the border, where the net rubs on the pallet edge every time it goes on.
  • Hooks that have opened, or loops that have worn through: the fixing is what fails first on a pallet net.
  • UV-stiffened webbing – faded and hard means weakened, whatever the mesh looks like.
  • Knots that have drawn in a rope net, or a splice that has started to slip.
  • A net that no longer reaches the deck: stretched out of shape, it cannot be tensioned and becomes decoration.

Six lines on the enquiry

Rooj 5 – the enquiry, line by line
# The line What it fixes What goes wrong without it
1 Pallet footprint and loaded height The size, and whether it is a lid or a cover with sides A net that hooks on but bridges the stack
2 What is on the pallet, and the smallest item The mesh A mesh the load falls through
3 Where it is used: pallet, rack or vehicle The fixing and the edge A pallet net ordered for a rack bay
4 How it is handled: forklift, pallet truck, by hand Hook placement and border strength Hooks torn off in the fork pocket
5 Webbing or rope, and the colour The construction and the dye lot A net too heavy to use, or invisible in the aisle
6 Whether it must be branded, bagged or labelled The label and the packing A net that cannot be matched to a bay or a customer

What is a pallet cargo net for?

It goes over a pallet load and hooks to the pallet so the stack stays square and on the deck when the pallet is moved, racked or picked from. It contains the load; it does not carry it.

Will it stop a pallet collapsing?

It stops the slow collapse – cartons walking, a stack leaning, the top layer sliding – which is what most pallet damage actually is. It will not hold a badly stacked pallet together if the stack itself is built wrong.

Net or stretch wrap?

Wrap for a load that ships once; a net for a load that is handled repeatedly, has to breathe, has to be seen into, or keeps splitting its wrap at the corners. Many warehouses use both: wrap for the stack, net for the handling.

Can it be used to lift a pallet?

Tsis muaj. It has no working load limit and no rated fittings. Lifting a pallet under a cargo net is a misuse of the product; a rated cargo lifting net is a different article.

What is pallet rack netting?

The same material hung across the face of a racking bay instead of over a pallet, fixed to the uprights so that nothing is pushed off the back of the rack or falls into the aisle. The mesh and the fixing are chosen for the bay, not for a pallet.

Do you make air cargo pallet nets?

Air cargo nets are a separate, regulated article: the restraint figures and the fittings come from the operator and the aircraft type, not from a catalogue. Where a project needs one, the specification is quoted against the operator’s requirement – send it with the enquiry.

What sizes do you make?

To the pallet or the bay: Euro 1200 x 800, industrial 1200 x 1000, square 1200 x 1200, and larger, with covers that drop down the sides for tall stacks. Measure the loaded pallet, not the bare deck.

How long does one last?

Years, in a warehouse: the net is not in the sun and the loads are light. The failures are cuts from fork tines and chafe at the pallet edge, so the border and the hooks are what to look at first.
