Grey is the colour that gets a second look on a rack, because an unmarked grey sling looks like a sling nobody rated. And 4 tonnes is the size where most lifts use two legs — which means the number on the label matters less than whether the two slings are actually the same length.
A Pair Is One Item, Not Two
Two legs only share a load when they are the same length. If one is 40 mm longer, the shorter one carries more — sometimes all of it — and the label on both still says 4,000 kg. On a two-leg lift the pair is rated as a pair, so the pair has to be built as a pair.
What ±3 % Looks Like in Millimetres
| EWL | Allowed band | Worst-case pair mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| 2 m | ± 60 mm | 120 mm |
| 4 m | ± 120 mm | 240 mm |
| 6 m | ± 180 mm | 360 mm |
| 8 m | ± 240 mm | 480 mm |
| 10 m | ± 300 mm | 600 mm |
Tolerance to EN 1492-1 on EWL. Two slings bought separately can legally differ by 0.6 m at 10 m — and still both be “10 m”.
Where 2 m Stops and 10 m Starts
The short end is for chokers and bench work, where the hook is already close to the load. The long end is for hooks that sit high — a spreader on a crane block, a four-point lift over a casing. Anything between is made to the number you give us, so there is no reason to accept a 6 m sling when the geometry wants 5.6 m.
Grey Gets Checked Twice
EN 1492-1 gives 4 t the grey code — one step above the 3 t yellow and below the 5 t red. On a mixed rack grey reads as “no colour”, which is exactly why an unmarked grey sling gets pulled by an inspector while a scruffy yellow one gets waved through. The colour is not the proof; the label is.
Every sling carries WLL, EWL, material, CE, manufacturer and a batch serial. If the label is missing, faded or the serial does not resolve, the sling is a grey strap with a story.

Buyer Questions
Can you supply 4 tonne slings as a matched pair?
Si, and it is the only way we recommend buying them for a two-leg lift. Both slings come off the same batch and are measured against the same reference, so the difference stays inside one tolerance band instead of two.
How long is a 4 tonne sling with 2 m EWL?
2 m between the bearing points of the two eyes. The eyes themselves sit outside that figure, so overall length is longer — typically by 300–400 mm depending on eye size. If the eye length matters for your hook, tell us at quotation stage.
Why are 4 tonne slings grey?
EN 1492-1 assigns grey to 4 t: green 2 t, yellow 3 t, red 5 t, blue 8 t, orange 10 t. Grey is the one colour that looks like “no rating”, which is why marking matters more here than on any other size.
What is the length tolerance?
±3 % of EWL to EN 1492-1 — ±120 mm on a 4 m sling. Two slings bought at different times can both pass and still differ by 240 mm, which is why pairs should be ordered together.
Can I use a 4 t sling where a 5 t was specified?
Only if the actual load and hitch allow it. A choked 4 t sling is rated 3,200 kg, so it is a different sling from a 5 t choked at 4,000 kg. Check the hitch before you substitute on price.
